Los Gatos, Leigh soccer teams locked in ties

    By Dick Sparrer

It was a slow start for the Los Gatos girls soccer team when the season began last week in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Wildcats lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Monta Vista to open the week, then fought Saratoga to a scoreless tie.

Sunny Vizzusi scored a first-half goal, but it wasn't enough to offset two goals in the first half by the Matadors. Both teams played a scoreless second half, so the Mats held on for the tight 2-1 win.

The Los Gatos boys battled Lynbrook to a 1-1 tie in their De Anza Division opener.

Seamus Ryan scored a first-half goal off a Rory Quick assist, but the Vikings battled back with a second-half goal to tie the Wildcats.

The Cats are now 2-2-3 for the year.

Leigh opened league play with a 3-1 win over Leland after falling 1-0 to Woodside earlier in the week in the Homestead Christmas Cup tournament.

The Longhorns, now 6-2-2 for the year, battled back from a 1-0 halftime deficit with three second-half goals to turn back Leland 3-1 in the first game of the year in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Garrett Thrasher scored a pair of goals, and Tim Harris had two assists to lead the Longhorns to the victory. Pete Pries scored off an Eric Bembry assist for Leigh's other goal.

The Leigh girls battled Independence to a scoreless tie in their Mt. Hamilton Division opener, then fought Leland to a 2-2 draw later in the week.

Kassi Doubrava and Allison White scored for Leigh in the tie against the Chargers.

Leigh is now 4-3-2 for the year.
