Nursery's dromedary given a holiday name

A to Z Nursery's newest baby dromedary has a name: Holly.

The name was the idea of Laura Czinski, Angela Ettinger, Gillian Geary, Mary Clabeaux and Joseph Durket, each of whom received a $100 gift certificate to the nursery for winning the "Name the Dromedary" contest.

The dromedary, born on the morning of the Dec. 4 Children's Christmas and Holiday Parade, belongs to Jon and BJ Anderson. The animal is the daughter of Robin, a parade participant.

The Andersons keep reindeer, zebras and 10 dromedaries on their ranch in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

    Christmas trees can be recycled

Los Gatans may recycle their Christmas trees by setting them out on the curb (but not in a waste container) on their regular recycling collection day.

Multi-family residents can place trees near their garbage bins during the week of Jan. 3-7 for collection.

According to the county's Solid Waste Commission, trees must be cut in half if they're more than 5 feet tall. Trees with decorations, tinsel, stands or nails cannot be recycled. Flocked trees are accepted.

    Montessori comes back to council

The Los Gatos Town Council on Jan. 3 will re-examine Mariposa Montessori's application to open a preschool at Faith Lutheran Church on Ferris Avenue School. School officials had previously been asked to take traffic mitigation measures, and the town authorized a traffic study for the area.

Some residents have expressed opposition to the plan. School officials say Los Gatos is facing a major preschool shortage.
