Little League will crown new champ on Saturday

By Saturday, there will be a champion in the major division ofthe Los Gatos Little League. Who that champion will be ... well,that's still anybody's guess.

The teams of the division are still working their way throughpool play this week before the top two teams from Pool A go upagainst the top two finishers in Pool B in the league semifinalson June 6, 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., at Baggerly Field at Blossom HillPark. The two winners will collide in the league championshipgame at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Cubs, the league's No. 1 seed in pool play, is off to a faststart in the tournament with three straight wins in Pool A play.The Cubs pounded the Tigers 16-4, whipped the Reds 14-5 andknocked off the Cardinals last Sunday morning.

Caleb Larson singled, doubled and tripled and K.C. Silva hadthree hits and a walk to lead the Cubs to the 16-4 win over theTigers last week. Andrew Gomez and Mathew Berg supported with twohits apiece. Gomez was also the winning pitcher, allowing just ahit and a run in three innings of work.

Blake Morrison tossed a complete game to lead the Tigers to a 3-1win over the Braves later in the week. The southpaw gave up justtwo hits and two walks while striking out six.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick lead with two runs in the first.Morrison and Geo Shannon each walked before Mike Granato ripped arun-scoring double. Shannon then scored on an infield out byBilly Cardia.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the fourth. T.J. Spilsburyand Roger Smith each singled, and Spilsbury scored when DominicGranato reached on an error.

The Tigers, 2-1 in the tourney, also beat the Reds 14-4.In another Pool A game, the Cards rolled to a 15-3 win over theReds in five innings.

Brett Litle went the distance for the win, tossing athree-hitter. He helped his cause with a single and a triple.Niki Chow was 3-for-3 with a double and scored three runs in thewin, and Jordan Dombrowsky singled and doubled.

The Cards held a slim 2-1 lead heading into the fourth, butunloaded for six runs in the fourth and seven more in the fifth.Hamilton Fairburn ripped a two-run home run in the bottom of thefourth for the Reds.

The Cardinals also edged the Braves 3-2 in pool play last week.Over in Pool B, the Red Sox opened with two wins, beating the A's18-6 and the Yankees 7-1.

Mikey Denevi was 3-for-3 with a double and scored three runs tolead the Red Sox to the 18-6 win over the A's. Chris Walker hadthree hits, Garrett Blackwell had two hits and four runs scored,Colin Chapman singled and doubled and scored three times, andStephen Hight singled and doubled.

Daniel Ouellet and Darren Churchill had two hits apiece for theA's, and Jackson Dallas doubled.The A's came back to edge the Giants 2-1 and blank the Yankees10-0.

Dallas tossed a complete game to lead the A's past the Giants.Dallas allowed just three hits and two walks and struck out 10 inthe win.

The A's overcame a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth. NickKalpin walked and stole second before scoring on a single byChurchill. Peter Heng later knocked in Churchill with a groundout to give the A's the 2-1 lead.Kiko Alonso had left the game with a 1-0 lead after three inningson the hill. He walked two and fanned six in three hitlessinnings.

The Giants had taken the 1-0 lead in the second when Matt Walleensingled, stole second and scored on a hit by Hank Hansen.Two innings later, though, the A's scored twice.The Giants came back later in the week with a 9-0 win over theIndians. Tim Trobbe homered in the win.
