Intel puts children to work—for a day, anyway

KIDS TO WORK DAY: Intel hosted some 600students from more than 40 Bay Area schooldistricts on Kids to Work Day recently.Students in grades 2-12 spent part ofthe day with their parents and otheremployees learning about the high-tech field.

Students from Los Gatos who attended includedStacey Fisher and ChrisDoherty-Gottschalk, recent LGHS grads;and Ariana Nicewonger, who will be afreshman at LGHS this fall. The Intel parentsinvolved were Bill Fisher andBarbara Nicewonger.

Stacey will attend Lewis and Clark College,in Portland, Ore. Chris will attendRose-Hulman Institute of Technology in thefall to study mechanical engineering. Lastsummer she won a berth to a science camp inTerre Haute, Ind., where the institute islocated.

Grade school students who took part includeAlex and Eric Lin, Michaeland Thomas Chu, MadhuNarashimhan, Mahdu Ganesh, AmyGregory, Tim Olson and JeffLien.

In the Intel day, the students participatedin workshops in engineering, problem-solvingand teamwork. They created computer chipsusing cookies as wafers and learnedengineering concepts by building rafts fromstraws. They also designed and built circuitboards and created and edited digital musicand video. Emergency Housing Consortium youthwere also part of the program at the SantaClara office.

FROGS ON THE FOURTH: In the tradition ofHal Holbrook, Los Gatan HarryFromm slipped into his Mark Twainpersona on July Fourth and read from Twain'sfamed story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog ofCalaveras County." The action took place atRoaring Camp Railroad.

Fromm also toured the grounds in characterduring the celebration. This is the 19thFourth of July Jumping Frog Jamboree at thecamp. Included were a frog jump, a toy frogflume race and rail excursions.

Fromm enacts famed characters and is theoperator of the Barbary Coast Theater inMonterey, a melodrama theater. For 12 yearshe and his wife, June, ran The OpryHouse in New Almaden, which is also amellerdramer venture.

MOVIN' ON: CHP Officer Michael Haashas been transferred to Santa Rosa, much tothe dismay of his local friends and fans, whowon't see much of him now. Earlier hepatrolled Highway 17 in the Santa CruzMountain area and gained a loyal truckfollowing there.

Haas and Jerry O'Pray of the PlumbingBureau in Campbell were Monday morningregulars at Gilley's for years, Haas beingenraptured by tales of O'Pray's weekendescapades at his beach house in Capitola.Waitress Pam Manes of Gilley's is onewho will miss the camaraderie and jollity ofthose Monday mornings.

"What a great guy," she says about Haas."He's one of the last of a dying breed. Justa genuinely nice guy—honest, forthright, thebest."

SINGLED OUT: The actual fervor of the Fourthof July may be over, but memories of itssplendors linger on, particularly for thetown (and the Chamber's) beautificationcommittee. The committee felt that two moreshould be singled out for special recognitionin the recent competition, besides thosealready cited.

They are the beauty shop "I Do," near Baker'sSquare on Los Gatos-Saratoga Road, and theHepplewhite Court cul-de-sac, in the Quitoarea, which was named best neighborhood forthe Fourth.

MUSEUMS ON THE MOVE: Two professionals havebeen added recently to the Museums of LosGatos staff. Jade Bradbury-Kalogeroshas been hired as the new exhibit curator,overseeing the history and natural historycollections, as well as the new artexhibition space.

Jade, an artist and designer, has been acurator at the Triton. Sue Bruce, aprofessional genealogist, has been working onthe town burial records in the museums'collection and has unearthed some interestingfinds. The museums' dream team has beenworking hard on renovating the art museumexhibition space.

The dream teamers are Doug Dodd, FSRCustom Woodworks; Rick Tharp of TharpDid It; Pate Linder-Dodd ofMuse Artistry; and Terry Martin, TerryMartin & Associates; plus JadeBradbury, Alastair Dallas andJeannie Perfili.

The dream team and other volunteerscreatively stored the natural historycollection, which is awaiting the renovationof the upper galleries. The collection willbe displayed upstairs in early 2003, afterthe area is outfitted to accommodate visitorswith disabilities.

ATTENDEES: Earl and FlorenceBell of Los Gatos were among the 100physicians, patients and caretakers attendingthe first California Transverse Myelitis (TM)Conference in Newport Beach last month. TM isan inflammation of the spinal cord thatcauses permanent damage to nerve function.

The conference was sponsored by theReeve-Irvine Research Center and the CodyUnser First Step Foundation.
