| Council extends moratorium on cell tower proposal By Gloria I. Wang Metro PCS will have to wait another yearbefore it finds out if it can offer cellularservices in Los Gatos. The Los Gatos Town Council recently voted toextend a previously approved moratorium onall wireless telecommunicationapplicationsfrom 45 days to approximatelyone year. The moratorium will push back a decision onMetro PCS' plan to install cellular equipmenton an existing PG&E tower on Lester Laneto July 2003. Council members on July 15 approved theextension of the urgency ordinance, which isinitially only effective for 45 days. The original ordinance was approved two weeksprior, after neighbors fought against MetroPCS' application, citing quality of life, safety and inappropriateness as reasons fordenial. Metro PCS representatives, meanwhile, saidthe company needed the three antennas on topof the 150-foot tower, as well as theequipment at the base of the tower, in orderto provide inexpensive, one-rate service. Thecompany had planned to start offering servicein Northern California this summer. The ordinance delays a decision on not onlyMetro PCS' application, but also othertelecommunications company's applicationsthat are currently in the town's planningprocess. There was no discussion in the July 15decision, which was unanimous from allcouncil members present. Vice Mayor SandyDecker was absent. |
