Thomas stars for LG in Pony sectional win

Just his pitching alone would have beenenough for onlookers to take notice of DerekThomas when the Los Gatos Pony League14-year-old all-stars opened sectional playlast weekend at Lou Viera Field in SantaClara.

But Thomas did more than pitch in the 10-0Los Gatos victory - he also hit a bit.

Thomas was 3 for 3 with a grand slam andknocked in six of his club's 10 runs in thewin over Pleasanton.

As if that wasn't enough, the talented14-year-old tossed a two-hit shutout in thegame shortened to six innings because of the10-run rule.

It was a fifth inning grand slam by Thomasthat pushed Gatos out to a big lead, and thenhis two-run single in the bottom of the sixthended the game.

The win pushed Los Gatos into a Mondaywinner's bracket game against either Fremontor Santa Clara. With a win, Gatos would beback in action on July 24, 5:30 p.m., atViera Field.

Thomas was touched for just a pair ofsingles, walked three and struck out six inflipping a complete game for Los Gatosagainst Pleasanton.

He led the charge at the plate, too, with histhree hits and six runs-batted-in. MartyMullins singled twice, walked twice andscored three runs in the win; Michael Gaultsingled and doubled; and Danny Frey ripped apinch-hit double.

Los Gatos broke up a scoreless tie with tworuns in the third. Mullins walked and Gaultand Thomas followed with singles to load thebases. Mullins scored on a wild pitch andGault raced home on a sacrifice fly to rightby Adam Wells.

Gatos opened the game up with four more inthe fifth. Brian Roby and Nate Dreesmanwalked and Mullins beat out an infield hit toload the bases. An out later, Thomas unloadedthe bags with a blast off the scoreboard instraightaway center field. The grand slamgave LG a 6-0 lead.

Los Gatos ended it in the home half of thesixth. Frey led off the inning with a doubleand an out later Robby Perry was hit by apitch. The runners moved to second and thirdon a passed ball, and both scored on a singleby Mullins. Gault followed with a doublebefore Thomas ripped his game-ending two-runsingle to left.

Members of the 14-year-old all-star teaminclude: Dreesman and A.J. Comeau of the RedSox; Frey, Matt Cisowski, Carlos Alonso andMatt Perrone of the Indians; Mullins of theCubs; Gault and Roby of the Braves; JustinSchafer and Forrest Gallien of the Mets;Wells of the Giants; Thomas and Perry of theWhite Sox; Danny Sullivan of the Cardinals;and Stephen Genetti of the Orioles.

The club is managed by Brian Market of theRed Sox, and Cory Kneeshaw and BrendanBoitano are his coaches.

3rd on the 4th

A Los Gatos club tied for third in a Fourthof July tournament hosted by Santa Clara.

Gatos pounded Santa Clara 21-7 and edged SanJose PAL 3-2, but lost a tough 5-4 nod toPacific Grove. The 2-1 effort left the localsin a three-way tie for first with PAL andPacific Grove in pool play, but PAL advancedbecause of the tiebreaker - fewest runsallowed.

PAL threw a no-hitter at Los Gatos, but Gatosstill managed to pull out a 3-2 win in itsfinal game of pool play.

Los Gatos scored three runs in the bottom ofthe seventh to overcome a 2-0 deficit to pullout the 3-2 win - all without benefit of ahit. Dreesman was hit by a pitch, Gaultreached on an error and Thomas was hit by apitch. Two runs scored when Wells reached onan error, and the winning run walked home ona balk.

Thomas tossed a complete game to get themound win.

Alonso singled and doubled and Frey, Wellsand Roby each clubbed doubled to lead LosGatos to a rousing 21-7 win over Santa Clara.
