Charles Martin
Los Gatos resident Charles Ralph Martin died
in his home on July 8, following a long
illness. He was 64.
Born May 13, 1937, in Riverside, Martin was a
graduate of Riverside High School, where he
was chosen as a High School All-American
football player in his senior year. After
attending the USC and UC-Berkeley, he
graduated from Utah State University with a
degree in wildlife management. He worked as a
high school science teacher for the Santa
Clara Unified School District for more than
30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Martin of Los
Gatos; daughters Leann Hoogeveen of Clifton,
Ohio, and Krissie Lindsey of San Jose; son
Steve Martin of San Jose; brothers Jim Martin
of Escondido and Bill Martin of Seattle,
Wash.; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services have been held.
Phyllis Stepovich
Phyllis Stepovich, who lived much of her life
in Los Gatos and Saratoga, died June 25, four
days before her 92nd birthday.
A native of Willmar, Minn., Stepovich was a
graduate of the University of Minnesota
School of Music, where she belonged to the
Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She taught music
briefly before moving to Los Gatos in 1935
with her family. Three years later, she
married local attorney George Stepovich, who
preceded her in death.
She was a member of PEO, an international
philanthropic and educational women's
organization, in which she made many friends.
She was also active in the Los Gatos History
Club, Montalvo Service League and Daughters
of the American Revolution.
Survivors include Marcia Stepovich of Nevada
City; son and daughter-in-law Thomas and
Patricia Stepovich of Aptos; grandson Gregory
Stepovich of Austin, Texas; siblings Marmion
Bergtold of Los Gatos and Duane Reed of
Corona Del Mar; and four nieces and nephews.
Memorial services have been held. Donations
can be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1150 S.
