St. Luke's concert series will feature a quintet—plus one
For the second concert of its Sunset Series, St. Luke's Episcopal Church in downtown Los Gatos has booked the San Jose Brass Quintet Plus One to perform in the church courtyard on Aug. 16, beginning at 8 p.m. The concert "will be an easy-to-hear program of music on the jazzier side," says Richard Coulter, St. Luke's director of music.

Together since 1981, the San Jose Brass Quintet Plus One originally formed to give concerts, play with the San Jose Symphony and perform at schools in the South Bay. They also give a yearly holiday concert for the San Jose Chamber Music Society. The group has become known for a large repertoire that includes Renaissance music, Baroque pieces, Dixieland tunes and present-day arrangements. The musicians are also known for developing a rapport with their audience.

True to its name, the group comprises five brass players and one percussionist, all of whom also performed with the San Jose Symphony. They include trumpeter James Dooley, who joined the San Jose Symphony as principal trumpet in 1983; trumpeter Warren Bertold, who joined the symphony in the same year as assistant principal/third trumpet; horn player Wendell Rider, who was for more than thirty years the symphony's principal horn; trombonist John Russell, a symphony player since 1975; tuba player Tony Clements, a symphony player since 1981; and percussionist Galen Lemmon, who played percussion with the symphony for 28 years.

St. Luke's Episcopal Church is located at 20 University Ave., next to Old Town. Admission is $20 for adults and $12 for students and senior citizens. Children 12 and younger are free. All members of the community are welcome. For more information, call 408.395.1541.
