With the deadline to file papers to run for
city council now past, five candidates are
officially in the race to become a Monte
Sereno council member.
Incumbent Barbara Nesbet, entrepreneur Deepak
Chopra, stay-at-home mother Kim Hanrahan,
consultant Curtis Wright and industrial
engineer Mark Brodsky are vying for three
council seats.
Brodsky, who has been involved with the
Winchester Boulevard/Daves Avenue
intersection safety project, has lived in
Monte Sereno for 12 years. Brodsky was also a
recording secretary for the now-defunct Los
Gatos Boulevard Community Alliance - a
"subcommittee of a subcommittee of a
subcommittee" that reviewed Los Gatos'
General Plan and North-Forty Specific Plan.
Brodsky, 52, says an important issue to him
is pedestrian safety. His wife, Marleen,
can't walk from their home on Grosvenor Court
to exercise at Courtside Club because of
speeding vehicles. "There's no safe way just
to walk five blocks, let alone let a child
walk to Daves Avenue School," Brodsky said.
Brodsky says development is inevitable but
that Monte Sereno needs to have a strategic
plan to curb growth. He is in favor of granny
units and "returning-children homes," he
said, laughing, "providing there aren't more
cars on the street."
Curtis, an 18-year resident of Monte Sereno,
decided to run at the last minute. Wright
says he has a balanced approach and could
help untangle many of the "spats" in the
city. "I have quite a bit of experience in
problem-solving," Wright said. A consultant
in telecommunications, marketing and sales
development, Wright is a neighbor of
Councilwoman Suzanne Jackson and is active in
the Rotary Club. Wright, 50, is also a member
of the Los Gatos Mountain Biking Club. He and
his wife live with a menagerie of pets.
Mayor Jack Lucas and Jackson, whose terms are
up, are unable to run for reelection because
of the city's term limits. Nesbet, however is
on her first council term and can be elected
for a second term.
