Event to honor John Baggerly
|
 |
From an old Underwood typewriter to a fast
new computer; from the former Los Gatos
Times-Observer to the current Los Gatos
Weekly-Times, the late John S. Baggerly has
seen and done it all. The longtime local
columnist and sports writer was a lover of
sports, history and, of course, the local
folks who brought the sports and history to
life. And so, in his honor, those folks - and
in many cases, their children and
grandchildren - will be gathering Aug. 25 at
Baggerly Field to celebrate the life of a
local boy who devoted his life to the career
he loved: journalism.
According to Baggerly's family, the
good-humored writer would much prefer a
ballpark-style gathering than a somber
memorial service, so that's just what they've
planned. "Sports was his church!" says his
widow Barbara Baggerly, chuckling.
And so, the event that begins at 11 a.m. at
Blossom Hill Park will include a free lunch
of hot dogs, chips, soda and ice cream. Of
course, even the celebration of a life such
as Baggerly's wouldn't be complete without a
few reflective thoughts, and those are on
tap, too.
According to Gayle Shank, Baggerly's youngest
daughter, eight of her father's friends,
colleagues or fellow sports fans have
confirmed that they will be speaking at the
event. The list includes Judy Bingman, Butch
Cattolico, Jack Cody, Ted Fletcher, Randy
Frey, Gene Goldberg, Ted Simonson and Joe
Zanardi.
Everyone who knew John Baggerly is welcome to
attend.
