School registration for 2002-03 year

Registration for the Los Gatos Union School District 2002-03 school year began last week.

Visit the Los Gatos Union School District office at 15766 Poppy Lane as soon as possible to register for Louise Van Meter Elementary School and R.J. Fisher Middle School. For more information about registration, call Fae Gisler for Van Meter or Kelley Burns for Fisher at 408.335.2247. Students of the Blossom Hill, Daves Avenue and Lexington schools will register at their respective offices.

To enroll new students, parents must complete a registration packet available at the school offices.

New kindergarten students must have the following immunizations: a TB mantoux test, three doses of hepatitis B, two doses of measles-MMR, three to four doses for polio, and a minimum of four doses for DPT as well as Varicella (or documentation of the child having had chickenpox previously).


Schools name new administrators

New administrators have been hired for the upcoming school year at Fisher Middle School and Blossom Hill School.

Blossom Hill has selected Charlotte Basinger as its new principal. Basinger has been involved in education for 36 years, 18 as a classroom teacher. She comes to the district from San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District, where she has been an elementary school principal since 1989.

James "Jim" LaTorre will be Fisher Middle School's new assistant principal. LaTorre has been involved in education since 1981, and most recently worked for the Pajaro Valley Unified School District as the assistant principal for Aptos Junior High School.


Kirby on list

Meghan Kirby, a 2001 Los Gatos High graduate, was recently named to the dean's list at Cornell University. Kirby, who maintained a 3.9 grade point average throughout her freshman year, will transfer this fall as a sophomore to Stanford University.


Illinois grads

Sara Lee and Kelly Rogers, both of Los Gatos, were among the 6,582 students to receive degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign recently.

Lee graduated with a bachelor of science degree in commerce and business administration, and Rogers earned a bachelor of science degree in fine and applied art.


Schubert a grad

Los Gatos resident Charles Schubert received first honors from Clark University for his academic achievement during the spring semester. To be eligible for first honors, students must maintain a GPA of 3.8 or higher. Schubert graduated in the spring as well, receiving a bachelor's degree in philosophy.


Vassar graduate

Monte Sereno resident Amanda Posner was recently one of 579 seniors to be awarded a bachelor's degree from Vassar College. Posner graduated with a double major in anthropology and sociology, and she received departmental honors.


McNabb honored

Los Gatos resident Ian McNabb has been named to the spring dean's list at Franklin and Marshall College. The list recognizes students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. McNabb, a 1999 graduate of Los Gatos High School, is the son of Los Gatos residents Daniel and Dr. Mary McNabb.


Northeastern list

Los Gatos residents Erin Peebles and Regina Rebelo have both earned places on the dean's list at Northeastern University. To achieve this award, students must attain a GPA of 3.25 or higher.

Peebles is a finance and insurance major who has also been named as an honor student, enabling her to take honors courses and earn extra credits through additional work in regular classes.
