Los Gatos fiesta is a great success
I would like to thank the Los Gatos
Weekly-Times, my neighbors in Los Gatos and
the surrounding communities, and our sponsors
for making the Fiesta de Artes a great
success. I want to especially thank the
dozens of volunteers who worked a total of
almost 900 hours that weekend to make it
happen. We hope to see you all next August!
I'd also like to invite anyone who is curious
about Kiwanis - the first service club formed
in Los Gatos - to attend our special Guest Day
luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 12, from noon to
1:30 p.m. at the Los Gatos Lodge.
—Alastair Dallas, president, Kiwanis Club of Los Gatos
Film festival offers double opportunity
On Thursday, Aug. 22, the Los Gatos community
has a doubly rare opportunity - to attend the
premiere of Reel Beginnings, a showcase of
local filmmaking talent as part of the second
annual Los Gatos Film Festival, and to see in
action the power of the extraordinary people
who live in our town.
In less than three months a group of
volunteers organized the Reel Beginnings
program. Twenty-two films were submitted, and
14 will be shown free at the Los Gatos Cinema
between 3 and 6 p.m. I encourage family,
friends and fans of films to come and see the
creative efforts of Los Gatos filmmakers.
I hope you also have an opportunity to
express your appreciation to the hardworking
members of the committee who assembled such a
great program, including Joanne Talesfore,
chairwoman, and Linda Asbury, Katherine Bowe,
Jim Creighton, Maggie Creighton, Don
Callahan, Blake Dirickson, Alice Lopes, Mike
Pierce, Mary Ruddell, Ellen Schuette, Mathew
Talesfore and Maggie Wilhelm. Their
dedication and hard work are tributes to what
makes Los Gatos such a special place to live,
work and play.
I think this is just the real beginning of
Reel Beginnings, which I am sure will become
a treasured tradition in Los Gatos. It is
great to see residents come together and work
so positively toward a common goal. I commend
you.
—Joe Pirzynski, councilman
John Baggerly will be missed as a friend, comrade
Soon after I arrived in Los Gatos in April
1963, a columnist reported in the Los
Gatos Times-Observer that I could be
found at my brother's business, Bill Mander
Foreign Cars on University Avenue. So John
Baggerly came looking for me and wrote an
article. We were both soldiers (he in the
American Army, I in the British Army), and he
discovered that all the places I had been
stationed at in Iran and Iraq, he had also
been, as though he followed in my footsteps
of 1942 through 1944, except he was about one
year behind me all the time. Since our first
meeting, we remained very good friends and
conferred with each other often during the
Gulf War.
I always saw him present at the Memorial Day
services at the Los Gatos cemetery, and
afterwards he would write an article to bring
back to the public's attention the service
and sacrifice soldiers give during wars. At
these services there was always a goodly
gathering of veterans who got to visit with
each other every year.
So it was a surprise to read in the space
where John usually had his column an article
on his demise. I am deeply sorry to see him
go. He will be missed as a friend, and a
comrade in arms.
—Danny Mander, Los Gatos
Don't forget Belvue Drive neighborhood
Bravo for the excellent variety of printed
articles. Your Decinzo cartoons and John
Baggerly and Tony Tomeo columns have always
been thought-provoking reading. Sometimes
even controversial. The idea for the features
on neighborhoods is right on. Please don't
leave out East Los Gatos, such as the Belvue
Drive neighborhood. A lot is going on, and
this is a good, family-oriented area.
—Bob Meyer, Los Gatos
Thanks for such a great local paper
ust a quick note to say thank you for
publishing such a great local paper.
I have lived in Los Gatos my entire life
(30-something years!), and enjoy flipping
through this newspaper and seeing stories
about lots of folks I know.
I was pleasantly surprised while turning the
page on kids' sports last night to see my
darling son's face beaming beside his trophy
for the Water City Selects roller hockey win!
Clearly yours is an unbiased paper, as we
have no idea how this information was
channeled. It was accurate, and his passion
for hockey is without question. Very cool to
see that!
Thanks, and keep up the great publishing.
—Leslie Paulides, Los Gatos
