Moulin Rouge provided theme for evening

KICKING UP THEIR HEELS: The estate of Orla MacLean was the setting Sept. 14 for Moulin Rouge, this year's Los Gatos Community Foundation garden party, featuring fashions, dinner, dance and silent auction. Many came dressed in the style of the French cabaret made famous by artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and just to round out the elegant costume mood, Azita Aghevli provided fashions from her In the Olde Manner dress shop on University Avenue. Taking a turn on the walkway were models Adu Bagely, Sandy Decker, Orla Christine MacLean, Tara Elizabeth MacLean, Orla MacLean, Jan Morris, Teri Hope-Hutchins, Joan Lochner, Dr. Tracy A. Miller, Cassie Mulloy, Ellen Graff, Jackie Ryan and Connie Schneider.

Escorts were Ted Simonson, Vince Mutascio, LG Foundation president; Paul Dubois and Don Callahan.

The Community Foundation, the nonprofit organization that raises funds for its own projects to benefit the town, as well as extending its nonprofit umbrella for other groups in the community, handed out grants just before Casino Royale struck up the music for dancing.

Recipients were Live Oak Nutrition Center, $500; Festival Theatre Group (which staged Shakespeare in the Park this summer), $2,500; Live Oak Adult Day Care, $2,000; Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley, $1,000; and the Sunset Concert Series (at St. Luke's), $1,000.

Chief coordinator for the event was Jane Goldbach. Sighted during the evening were the town's new police chief Scott Seaman and wife Christina, Lawrence and Jimmie Dawson, MarLyn Rasmussen, who was escorted by Ed Stahl, and Kent and Beth Smith. Council members in attendance included Sandy Decker with her husband, Gil ; Mayor Randy Attaway, with his wife, Sara; and Joe Pirzynski with his wife, Pam. Former town manager Dave Knapp, now city manager of Cupertino, came with his wife, Kay.

COMMEMORATIVE JERSEY: Jeff Brzycki organized the basketball game and ceremony at LGHS in January that was a tribute to Todd Beamer, one of the heroes of United Flight 93, the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11. T-shirts and sweatshirts printed with the words "Let's Roll" were sold at the game.

Those were the words that emerged as the motto of the plane's heroic passengers. The T-shirts were sold to raise money for a basketball scholarship to be given in Todd Beamer's honor.

Todd Beamer was a basketball player at LGHS, and his jersey was donated by his family to the school. It was framed and now hangs in the basketball gymnasium.

Brzycki got his friend Sen. Ted Aanavas of Wisconsin to have President Bush sign one of the T-shirts that were for sale. This was accomplished when the president recently visited Wisconsin and Aanavas was the second one in the receiving line awaiting the presidential plane. Now the Bush-signed shirt can hang alongside the Beamer jersey.

How did Brzycki get so involved in these Los Gatos and Sept. 11 doings? His girlfriend's son, Chris Clock, plays basketball at Los Gatos High. His girlfriend is Tracy Langley, a teacher at Santa Theresa High. And Brzycki is an idea man.
