Gatos frosh-sophers pound Aragon 27-6
By Dick Sparrer
If a goal of the frosh-soph football program at Los Gatos High is to prepare players for their varsity years by teaching them the Los Gatos system, then the frosh-soph program is well on its way.

The young Wildcats looked like they were in mid-season form in beating the Aragon Dons 27-6 Friday at Helm Field. Quarterback Kevin McCarty threw four touchdown passes to three different receivers in rolling up 27 first-half points. For the game, he completed 11 of 16 passes for 188 yards.

The Wildcats' opening drive began at the Los Gatos 15-yard line and ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass from McCarty to tight end Keenan Murray. Alex Ghanavatti, who shared time at running back with Brian Bolandi, carried most of the load on the ground with slashing runs through the Dons defense. On the day, Ghanavatti had 47 yards in 11 rushes, and Bolandi had 40 yards in seven tries. Mike Brienzo added 17 yards in five carries and caught two touchdown passes.

McCarty passed to Brienzo for the touchdown to make the score 13-0 before Aragon got on the board.

On the next possession, another McCarty to Brienzo pass covered 58 yards to put Los Gatos up 20-6. Brienzo took a flanker screen and weaved his way through Don defenders for the score.

McCarty then led the young Wildcats on a 63-yard drive in the waning minutes of the first half. Jeremy Bayes caught three passes in the drive, and Bolandi took the ball the final 20 yards on a screen pass for the score.

The offensive line--#8212;anchored by center Anthony Skaran, guards Eric Chen and Alan Wang and tackles Joey Starick and Matt Showalter--#8212;did a good job, said head coach Dale Gustafson.

The defense was strong all day, led by linebackers Eric Chen (six tackles) and Derek Thomas. The Dons seemed to come out wanting to throw the ball but were continually thwarted by a strong Wildcat rush. Defensive end John Lynch kept pressure on the Dons passing attack and was credited with four tackles. Mark Johnson had five tackles from his strong safety position, and Brienzo added two tackles and an interception.
