The Los Gatos frosh-soph football players learned an important lesson on Friday in a 19-9 loss to the St. Francis Lancers—to beat a quality team, they must play 40 minutes of quality football.
The young Wildcats dominated the first half, scoring on their first two drives and holding the Lancers to 55 total yards and just two first downs. However, the second half belonged to St. Francis, who scored three times to defeat the Wildcats.
After taking the opening kickoff on their 11-yard line, the Wildcats drove 79 yards in nine plays to the Lancers' 10, where the drive stalled. Jeremy Bayes kicked a 27-yard field goal to put Los Gatos ahead 3-0. Alex Ghanavatti carried four times for 55 yards on the drive.
Their second possession was more productive, covering 65 yards in eight plays, with Ghanavatti scoring on a 5-yard touchdown run around the right side. In this drive Mike Brienzo was responsible for 39 of the yards with runs of 17 and 22 yards. Bayes' extra point try was wide right, and the score stood at 9-0 in favor of Los Gatos.
St. Francis broke into the scoring column on the opening kickoff of the second half with a 96-yard kickoff return by Chris Reese. He bobbled the kickoff at the 4-yard line, then broke through the first wave of Los Gatos tacklers and used his speed to outrun pursuers up the left sideline for the score.
Reese used his speed on the next Lancer drive to run wide on the Wildcat defense, running for 44 yards of a 60-yard drive, including a 10-yard touchdown run. A missed extra point left the score at 12-9 in favor of St. Francis.
The Lancers' final score came on a 79-yard pass play early in the fourth quarter from quarterback Matt Long to Brady Fuerst.
In the second half the Wildcat offense was continually frustrated by Lancer blitzes and stunts, which seemed to thwart every opportunity as they twice turned the ball over on downs inside the St. Francis 20-yard line.
Los Gatos quarterback, Kevin McCarty was 7 for 15 passing with three sacks. Ghanavatti led the Los Gatos rushers with 116 yards on 20 carries, with Brienzo adding 61 yards on seven carries. Devin Lopez added 53 yards on five carries and Brian Bolandi had 24 in five carries.
