Kapp leads Wildcats to Pop Warner win
By Dick Sparrer
It's been a while since the Kapp name has been featured in the newspaper for glorious deeds on the football field.

There was a time when Joe Kapp was making headlines for his accomplishments, first as the quarterback for Cal's Golden Bears and later in leading the Minnesota Vikings to the Super Bowl.

But Kapp is back—not Joe, but his son Will, who starred offensively and defensively for the Los Gatos Pop Warner Wildcats in a tight 14-12 win over the San Lorenzo Valley (SLV) Cougars.

Kapp ran back the opening kick off 70 yards for a touchdown and kicked the 2-point conversion, then went on to lead his club in rushing yards and tackles in the tight win.

Bobby Enquist also ran well for the Wildcats, running behind the solid blocking of David Martini, Billy James, Wes Howell and Jeff DeBarr.

Louis Santoro picked off a Cougar pass in the fourth quarter to help the Wildcats clinch the win.

The Los Gatos Tigers, Panthers and Cougars also notched wins the same day in action against San Lorenzo Valley (SLV).

The Tigers improved to 2-0 in the young season with a tight 12-5 win over the Cougars. Andrew Berg's 14-yard run set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Eric Reichwein in the first quarter, and Colin Chapman scored on an 18-yard run in the second period to lead the Tigers to the win.

Robert Kundtz led all ground gainers for the winners with 48 yards on seven carries, and quarterback Kyle Miller completed 2 of 5 passes for 14 yards, both to Will Sparks.

Sparks was the squad's tackling leader with eight stops. Chapman was in on seven tackles, and Joey Vizzusi had five tackles, recovered a fumble and forced another fumble. Sparks and Jermel Ladd each sacked the San Lorenzo Valley quarterback.

Nate Burke and Chris LaBouff each ran for touchdowns and the defense notched its second straight shutout in the Panthers' 12-0 win over the Cougars.

LaBouff, Kevin Kephart, Burke and Alex Estrada were the defensive leaders in the win.

Special teams played a key role for the Panthers in the victory. Kephart's three deep kickoffs pinned SLV deep in its own territory.

In the battle of the Cougars, Los Gatos rolled to a 26-0 win over SLV.

The Gatos Cougars were led by the running backs Robbie Comeau, Nick Kalpin and Nick Scudellari, who each ran for touchdowns in the game. Danny Foster and Scott Day led the charge up front in the offensive line.

Comeau raced 75 yards for his touchdown, picking up a key downfield block from Ryan VanAmburg.

Thomas Reynolds and Sam Scudellari were tackling leaders for the Cougars, and Kevin Fowler and Reynolds led a tremendous goal line stand in the first period.
