Young Wildcats hurry up, and roll over Matadors
By Nick Tuttle
The Los Gatos frosh-soph football team used a hurry-up offense and a stout defense to defeat the visiting Monta Vista Monarchs 27-0 Friday at Helm Field.

"Our team came out and played a very solid game of football," said coach Dale Gustafson following the game. "We ran hard, and Kevin [McCarty] did a nice job of getting the ball to his receivers."

"I feel like we are improving each week in different aspects of the game," he added. "Our defense played outstanding. They worked hard all week preparing for this team."

Following a 23-yard return of the opening kickoff by Brian Bolandi, the young Wildcats used a no-huddle offense as they marched 62 yards in 12 plays for the touchdown. McCarty capped the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Keenan Murray. Jeremy Bayes' extra point made it 7-0 early in the first period.

McCarty finished up 7 of 13 passing for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Bolandi carried much of the running load for the night with 10 carries for 40 yards, and Alex Ghanavatti added seven carries for 78 yards.

The second Los Gatos score came early in the second quarter with another long drive of 61 yards, aided by two penalties on the Matadors. With the ball on the Monta Vista 15, McCarty found Bayes in the corner of the end zone for the score. Bayes added the extra point.

Defensively, the Wildcats shut down the Matadors with strong play from linebacker Eric Chen (seven tackles), free safety Derek Thomas (six tackles) and noseguard Devin Lopez (four tackles).

A pass interception by Thomas at the Monta Vista 29-yard line in the second quarter led directly to the Wildcats' third score of the game, when, on the second play of the possession, Ghanavatti ran 26 yards for the score.

The final Los Gatos TD came early in the second half. Mike Brienzo ran 14 yards to the 1-yard line and Bolandi did the rest pounding it into the end zone, making the score 27-0.

The Matadors had several drives in the second half, advancing the ball inside the Los Gatos 10-yard line, but the defense turned back each thrust. Defensive end Tom Towson stymied the final drive with back-to-back sacks.
