The Prowler
This aesthetically oriented cat thinks poet John Keats said a mouthful when he wrote, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." The Prowler thinks the Town of Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee would agree, especially since it sponsors several seasonal and holiday-related decorating contests each year.

Recently, according to chairperson Shirley Henderson, the group recognized local homes and businesses for having the most welcoming entrances or porches. Henderson says it was impossible to just choose one residence as the best from among the dozens of entrants, so the committee named three first-place winners! Kudos go to the Foxes at 9 Peralta Ave., the Deckers at 45 Glenridge and the Maceentes at 16373 Englewood Ave.

As for the businesses, the winner was the Chart House, a gorgeous Victorian at 115 N. Santa Cruz Ave. First runner-up was Sweet Peas Cafe—about as far from Victorian architecture as it gets—at 453 N. Santa Cruz Ave. Earning special recognition for "most stately welcoming entrance" was Los Gatos High School.

On a completely different note, the Prowler hears Los Gatos' Boy Scout Troop 501 is sponsoring an all-day event called the Merit Badge Midway on Oct. 12 at Fisher Middle School. It's a chance for Scouts to earn up to two merit badges by taking workshops.

Topics include electronics, electricity, climbing, environmental science, genealogy, pioneering, communications and railroading, the latter taught by Malcolm "Mac" Gaddis, who plans to bring along his 5-foot-long working steam engine. For all the details, call Craig Herman at 408.356.1835.
