Flu shots coming up, and senior citizens should be first in line
Each year, the flu kills an estimated 20,000 people nationally and hospitalizes another 114,000. The elderly and other high-risk people should be the first to receive flu vaccinations, according to a public health advisory issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the 2002-03 influenza season.

Flu shots will be given to persons who are disabled or age 55 and older at the following senior and community centers on a first-come-first-serve basis.

* Campbell Senior Center, 1 W. Campbell Ave., banquet hall on the Winchester side; Nov. 1, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.; cost is $5.

* Santa Clara Senior Center, 1303 Fremont St.; Nov. 1, 9 a.m. to noon; cost is $5.

* Saratoga Senior Center, 19655 Allendale Ave.; Nov. 2 and 9, 8 a.m. to noon; cost is $5.

* Cupertino Senior Center, Quinlan Community Center, 10185 Stelling; Nov. 7, beginning at 9 a.m.; cost is $8.

* Willows Senior Center, 2175 Lincoln Ave.; Nov. 7, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.; cost is $8.

* Sunnyvale Senior Center, 820 West McKinley Ave.; Nov. 8, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.; cost is $8.

* Los Gatos Neighborhood Center, 208 Main St.; Nov. 14, 1 to 4 p.m.; cost is $8.

* Some Longs Drugs Stores will have flu shots available in October for $20: Oct. 15, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Bascom Avenue across from the Pruneyard in Campbell; Oct. 21 and Nov. 2, 4 to 7 p.m., 5285 Prospect Road, San Jose; Oct. 23, 4 to 7 p.m., 750 Blossom Hill Road (Kings Court), Los Gatos.

Flu shots are also available through many primary care physicians.
