No school board election this year

The Los Gatos Union School District will not hold elections for its board seats this year. There were three seats open for the new term, and only three candidates filed for the positions.

Tina Orfi-Hartigan is an incumbent and will continue her current position on the board. Phil Couchee and Kathy Bays will be the new board members, replacing Tom O'Donnell, who has served the board for more than 20 years, and Andrew Finelli, who served one term.


Locals honored at Arkansas

The University of Arkansas Alumni Association's San Francisco Bay Area chapter has awarded two Los Gatos residents scholarships to attend the university.

The chapter chose Arkansas students Andy Housley and Marcis Riedel based on their academic achievement, leadership and community service.


Students score high on PSAT

Los Gatos High School will be observing National Merit Day on Oct. 16. The day is held in recognition of students who earned high PSAT scores.

Los Gatos High has five students who are eligible for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Program as a result of their PSAT scores. Kathlyn Ford, Ben Koupal, Lauren Meltzer, Karen Rossmassler and Randy West all scored in the top half of the top 1 percent of those students who took the test in 2001.

Eight Los Gatos High students were nominated as "commended students" for their scores being in the top 5 percent of all test takers. They are Tova Abelman, Allegra Doriss, Sara Gaubatz, Greg Holmes, Felix Li, Rebbecca Norman, Cormac Ryan and Sandy Sargeant.


Open house at Hillbrook

Hillbrook School will hold an open house for the community on Oct. 19, 9:30­11:30 a.m. A student-led tour of the campus will be available, and teachers and trustees will be available to talk with parents. Call 408.356.6116 for more information.


'Our Town' takes center stage

The Los Gatos High School Thespian Club has chosen Our Town for its fall play. Opening night is Oct. 17 in the high school theater. The opening night performance will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 for general admission, with the money going to support the drama program at the school. Future performances include shows at 8 p.m. on Oct. 19, 25, and 26, and a 7 p.m. show on Oct. 24.
