Nick Miller ran 15 yards for a touchdown and Kevin Kephart scooped up a fumble and raced 60 yards for a score to start the Los GatosSaratoga Panthers on the road to a 34-20 victory over the Morgan Hill Raiders in Pop Warner football play.
The Panthers, now 5-0 for the year, upped their lead to 22-0 before the half after Sean Whalen dashed 55 yards for a TD. Trevor Vlay added a 45-yard touchdown run in the second half and quarterback Alex Estrada scored a sneak to close out the scoring for the Panthers.
Whalen led the ground attack in the win, and Vlay was the top receiver for the locals. Chris LaBouff and Chase Hayhurst finished as the top tacklers.
A week earlier, Miller had run for 200 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a 22-6 win over the Santa Teresa Bulldogs.
Estrada scored the other TD in the win, and Kephart added two conversion kicks. Nate Burke, Miller and Hayhurst were defensive leaders for the Panthers.
In other action, the Wildcats pulled out a tight 8-6 win over the Morgan Hill Raiders to push their record to 3-2.
Will Kapp carried 18 times for 149 yards to lead the offense. Chad Bannan and Mitchell Knauf also ran the ball well in the win.
Louis Santoro intercepted two passes, running his season total to five, and Bannan picked off one. Jesse Tinsley added a fumble recovery.
Kellan Barker was the top tackler for the Wildcats and came through with the play of the game when he busted through the line to block Morgan Hill's attempt at a game-tying conversion kick.
The week before, Anthony Ladd was in on eight tackles and recovered a fumble and Kapp ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Wildcats to a 20-6 win over the Santa Teresa Bulldogs.
Ladd led the defensive effort as the Cats held the Bulldogs to just 59 yards in total offense. Jeff DeBarr and Barker were in on five tackles apiece and Santoro had an interception. DeBarr recovered an onside kick and Pablo Anzoategui recovered a Santa Teresa fumble.
Kapp led the offense, carrying 13 times for 101 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tinsley.
The Cougars rolled to a 36-8 victory over Morgan on Oct. 6, with the defense chipping in with a pair of touchdowns.
On the first play of the game, Ryan Van Amburg forced a fumble that Sam Scudellari picked up and ran 30 yards for a touchdown. On Morgan Hill's next possession, Scott Day hit a ball carrier in the end zone for a safety.
A pass interception and 30-yard return by Christian Walker set up another Los Gatos touchdown in the game.
The Cougars really spread out the scoring in the win. Robbie Comeau scored on a 35-yard run, Nick Scudellari scored on a 1-yard plunge, S. Scudellari tossed a 40-yard scoring pass to Comeau, Nick Kalpin ran 50 yards for a TD and Kamron Fariba booted three conversion kicks.
Center Nick Smith led a solid effort by the offensive line in the game.
A week earlier, Van Amburg sparked a successful day for the punt return team when the Cougars battled Almaden.
Will Sparks ran for 45 yards on 11 carries and he and Jermel Ladd had seven tackles apiece for the Tigers in a 0-0 tie with the Morgan Hill Raiders.
Colin Chapman, Robert Kundtz and Joey Vizzusi got in on six tackles each, and Sparks and Myles Johansen each recorded sacks.
Kyle Miller completed 2 of 3 passes, one of them to Robert Kundtz.
The Tigers are now 3-1-1 for the year.
