The Los Gatos frosh-soph football team coasted to its fifth victory in six games with a 38-7 win over the Los Altos Eagles on Oct. 18. Special teams either accounted for, or put the young Wildcats in position for, their first four scores.
Alex Ghanavatti returned the opening kickoff for an apparent touchdown, but the Wildcats were detected holding on the play and the ball returned to the Los Altos 45-yard line. Jeremy Bays capped a six-play drive with a 32-yard field goal.
After the defense held Los Altos on the next series, Eric Chen blocked the Eagles' punt and Keenan Murray scooped up the ball and stepped into the end zone for the second score, making it 10-0 early in the first quarter.
The Eagles then marched 55 yards only to have A.J. Comeau pick off an Eric Hansen pass.
Los Altos gained possession again but couldn't move. Michael Brienzo returned an Eagle punt 22 yards to the Los Altos 20. Devin Lopez then scored on a 20-yard run.
The Eagles scored to make it 17-7, but Brian Bolandi bulled his way for a 79-yard return before he was stopped at the Eagle 8-yard line. Ghanavatti scored on an 8-yard run.
The Wildcats scored once more before halftime on a 61-yard pass from Kevin McCarty to Brienzo. Bays' fourth conversion made the halftime score 31-7.
On their first possession of the second half, Los Gatos drove 53 yards in five plays, with Ghanavatti running for 16 yards and passes from McCarty to Bolandi and Brienzo eating up 13 and 14 yards, respectively.
Leading the defense were linebackers Chen and Derek Thomas, defensive ends Murray and Spencer Maltbie and interior linemen Lopez, Chris Cuthbert and John Lynch.
