Los Gatos honors top students as youth citizens of the year
By Mandy Major
To be an outstanding student in Los Gatos is quite a feat. Just ask Daniel Kluesing, Jeff Lien, Lisa Jemison, Ryan Daily and Jacob Cooper.

These five students were winners of the highly selective 2002 Los Gatos Youth Citizen of the Year award. In a ceremony sponsored and held at the Youth Park of Los Gatos on Oct. 26, these five local students were recognized for their exceptional contributions to their schools and community.

"All of these kids do amazing things," said Youth Park coordinator Sue LaForge. "They have such outgoing personalities and are very interested in helping out organizations and individuals."

Daniel Kluesing, a senior at Leigh High School, was nominated by Vice Principal Jennifer Foster. Foster said she nominated Kluesing because he is "an outstanding student and just a great kid."

In addition to his high academic achievement, Kluesing is president-elect of the Associated Student Body, Key Club treasurer, a member of the debate team, and a varsity swimmer and cross country runner. He was also chosen to be the student representative for the school board in his district.

Jeff Lien, an eighth-grader at Fisher Middle School, was described by seventh-grade science teacher Mary Granger as someone that "just has a spirit about him." She said, "He doesn't wait to be asked for help; he just looks around and finds things to do."

Lien has consistently made the honor roll and is recognized as an exceptional student. He is a student council member, performs in school productions and is active in the school's Club Live program, which promotes fun without drugs or alcohol. Lien also helped extensively with the school's pack-up effort to prepare for remodeling.

Three awardees came from Los Gatos High School. Although no school official was available for comment, a school administrator commented that all three students are "just terrific, great kids."

Lisa Jemison, a junior, is a Golden State Exam honorary and secured a place in the National Honor Society for her academic achievement. Jemison is a member of the marching band and volunteers with the Children's Discovery Museum in San Jose, Head Start and local homeless shelters.

Jacob Cooper, also a junior, is avidly involved in the school's technical crew, helping operate sound and lighting for all school events throughout the year. Cooper also offers his help in many town events, including the annual Christmas parade.

Ryan Daily, a senior, is the school's senior class secretary and a treasurer for the Associated Student Body. Daily is a high academic achiever and is also a member of the varsity basketball and baseball teams.

The winners received plaques, framed certificates from the Youth Park and engraved whistles that they will blow to kick off the Los Gatos Christmas Parade Dec. 7.
