Hockey, volleyball teams chase CCS titles
By Dick Sparrer
Is there a rematch in the making?

The Los Gatos girls field hockey team certainly hopes so as the Central Coast Section (CCS) playoffs wind down to the final week.

Los Gatos lost a heartbreaker to St. Francis in the CCS championship game on the Los Gatos field last fall, and the Wildcats would like nothing better than to get another shot at the Lancers on Saturday. There are just two things standing in the way—North Salinas and Prospect.

Gatos was to face North Salinas in a CCS semifinal game on Nov. 19, the same day St. Francis was facing off with Prospect in the CCS semis.

The winners of those two games will meet in the section championship game on Nov. 23, 11 a.m., at Los Gatos.

All four teams won over the weekend. Los Gatos blanked Leigh 3-0, while St. Francis destroyed Westmont 6-1. North Salinas nipped Leland 2-1 in overtime, and Prospect edged Los Altos
1-0.

St. Francis, 14-2-1 for the year, is the No. 1 seed in the tournament heading into the semifinals, and Los Gatos, 16-3, is seeded No. 2. North Salinas boasts an 11-1-1 record, and Prospect is 14-5-1.

Junior Sarah Yuki knocked in two goals, picking up assists from seniors Tiffany Baiardo and Annie Smith and junior Alison Reyes, and Baiardo added one to lead the Wildcats past the Longhorns on Saturday.

The Wildcats will open the CCS Division 2 girls volleyball tournament on Nov. 20 when they face Carlmont at 8 p.m. on the floor at Santa Clara High School.

The Cats take a 21-6 season record into the Wednesday match. The Scots, who opened the tournament with a 15-5, 15-6, 15-10 win over Overfelt, are 19-9 for the year. Los Gatos drew a first-round bye in the tourney and is seeded No. 1.

The winner of the Wednesday match advances to the CCS championship match Nov. 23, 5 p.m., at West Valley College in Saratoga against the Aragon (11-10)-Leland (20-10) winner. The Dons and Chargers will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Santa Clara.

Seniors Sandy Sargent and Katie Rowell top the roster of head coach Joe Ripp's team. Juniors Hilary Lewis, Caroline Walters, Cassie Eggers, Katie Kramer and Chloe Wilder and sophomores Rebecca Mason, Alexa Anderson and Michelle Johnson round out the squad that's chasing the CCS championship.
