Tigers beat Lions to win title
By Dick Sparrer
Will Sparks ran for a touchdown and kicked the 2-point conversion to lead the Los Gatos Tigers to a 16-14 win over the Santa Cruz Sea Lions in the Peninsula Pop Warner Football League championship game on Nov. 16.

The win left the Tigers 8-0 against teams in their division and 8-1-1 for the year.

The Tigers had taken the early lead when Colin Chapman hauled in a short pass from Kyle Miller and broke it for a 67-yard touchdown play. Sparks kicked the 2-point conversion, the ball bouncing off the post and through the uprights. That would turn out to be a very big kick indeed.

The Sea Lions scored twice to take a 14-8 lead in the final quarter, but Sparks tied the game with a 3-yard touchdown run, then gave the Cougars the lead with another 2-point conversion kick.

Santa Cruz tried to fight back, but Joey Vizzusi recovered a fumble inside the final two minutes to clinch the victory.

Sparks led the offensive attack in the win with 64 yards on 13 carries. Miller hit on 3 of 7 passes for 76 yards.

Robert Kundtz and Jermel Ladd were in on nine tackles apiece to lead the defense. Vizzusi had eight tackles to go with his fumble recovery and Garrett Irizarry, Miller and Sparks were in on seven tackles each. Irizarry and Miles Johansen teamed to force a Santa Cruz fumble.

A week earlier, the Tigers rolled over the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars 22-6.

Miller hit on 7 of 8 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns, and Sparks caught six passes for 116 yards and ran six more times for 60 yards to lead the offense. Chapman and Forrest Groth also caught passes in the win.

The Los Gatos Cougars ripped Santa Cruz 30-6 to advance to the Pop Warner championship game against Daly City.

Robbie Comeau put the Cougars on top early with an 11-yard touchdown run; then Kamron Fariba followed blocks by Chris Frost and Julian Khanzada to score on a 7-yard run.

Nick Kalpin had touchdown runs of 40 and 60 yards in the win, and Thomas Reynolds picked off a pass and ran it back 50 yards for a score. Christian Walker and Sean Goodison also had interceptions for Los Gatos.

The Panthers lost a tough 14-8 decision to the Menlo Park Vikings in the second round of the playoffs on Nov. 10.

The Panthers, 7-3 for the year, took the early lead on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Alex Estrada to Nick Hirschman, but the Vikings answered with two touchdowns to get the win.

Kevin Kephart led the ground attack for the Panthers and Chris Labouff, Chase Hayhurst and Nate Burke were defensive leaders.
