St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 20 University Ave., will hold a holiday-themed evensong program on Dec. 1 featuring Camerata California, a locally based group that bills itself as an "early music ensemble." The program begins at 4 p.m. with a short religious service in which traditional evening prayers are sung instead of spoken.
Afterwards, Camerata California performs for a 40-minute concert of Renaissance music from the 15th and 16th centuries, including sacred and secular songs, vocal pieces and instrumental dance tunes appropriate to the winter season. Among the composers are Dufay, Isaac, Sweelinck and Clement.
Camerata California was formed five years ago by musicians interested in exploring, rehearsing and performing music from the medieval through the Baroque eras. Dr. Vernon Read, former professor of early music at San José State University, is the artistic advisor of the self-directed ensemble, which is comprised of May Anne James, Lettie Smith, Jennifer Randolph, Mike Megas and Ted Lorraine. Their musical instruments include the recorder, krummhorn, shawm, rankett, galute, regal, guitar and crotales.
Everyone is welcome to attend the evensong service and concert. There is no charge for the concert, but a freewill offering will be accepted. For more information, call 408.354.2195.
