Although Clyde Laird will be participating in perhaps the town's biggest yearly celebration, the 46th annual Children's Christmas and Holiday Parade isn't the only major event happening this weekend.
On Friday, Dec. 6, holiday fun in Los Gatos begins with the tree-lighting ceremony at Los Gatos Town Plaza Park.
The Los Gatos High School band will kick off the evening with a performance at 4 p.m., followed by presentations of the town's youth citizens of the year, a performance from the Los Gatos Christian Church Choir and a singalong. Mayor Sandy Decker will light the town tree at 6 p.m., then Santa Claus will visit the park.
The event is sponsored by the Los Gatos Community Foundation, which will provide refreshments.
At 7 p.m. the same evening, the Town of Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce will start its horse-drawn carriage rides. The rides run most days between Dec. 6 and Dec. 23 and are generally in the evening hours.
Horses will take clients from Town Plaza Park through the streets of the Almond Grove District, ending on N. Santa Cruz Avenue.
A 20-minute carriage ride starts at $10 for an individual child seat, $20 for an adult seat and between $75 and $80 for a private carriage. To reserve a space on the carriage, call the Chamber at 408.354.9300.
The parade, which has become an attraction for not only Los Gatans but also out-of-town visitors, starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. The parade route is from Almendra Avenue, down N. Santa Cruz, onto Main Street and ending on Church Street.
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the following streets will be closed to vehicles: N. Santa Cruz Avenue from W. Main Street to Los GatosSaratoga Road; W. Main from N. Santa Cruz to High School Court; Almendra, Bachman, Nicholson and Bean avenues between N. Santa Cruz and Tait avenues; and Village Lane. Also, there will be no parking in the town parking lot on Bachman and Los GatosSaratoga Road between N. Santa Cruz and University.
