Cougars are Pacific Northwest champs
By Dick Sparrer
The Los Gatos Cougars have gone where no Los Gatos Pop Warner Football team has gone before—they've won a Pacific Northwest regional championship.

The Cougars, champs of the Peninsula Pop Warner Football League, advanced to the Division III Junior Midget Pacific Northwest regional playoffs and knocked off Novato 38-20 to nail the crown.

Nick Scudellari, thanks to key blocks from Chris Frost, Kevin Wilbur and Chris Evan, rambled 40 yards for a touchdown on the Cougars' first possession of the night.

The next time the Cougars got the football, it was Scudellari capping a drive with a 4-yard TD run. Danny Foster and Scott Day delivered key blocks for the Cougars.

Robbie Comeau scored on a 50-yard run, then followed blocks by Nick Kalpin and Ben Carleton to run 65 yards for a touchdown.

Quarterback Sam Scudellari capped the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown run, and Kamron Fariba kicked four 2-point conversions.

Leading the defensive charge for the Cougars were Kalpin, Ryan Van Amburg, Christian Walker and Nick Smith.

The Los Gatos Tigers, meanwhile, lost 35-8 to the Novato Killer Bees in the Pacific Northwest regional championship game.

Kyle Miller tossed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Will Sparks, and Sparks kicked the 2-point conversion to account for all of the Los Gatos scoring.

Miller finished the day hitting on 6 of 11 passes for 94 yards, and Sparks had two catches for 89 yards. Robert Kundtz led the ground game with 10 carries for 43 yards.

Sparks was the Los Gatos tackling leader with 12 stops. Kundtz was in on eight tackles, Garrett Irizarry six and Colin Chapman, Michael Combs, Matthew Kennedy and Jermel Ladd five each.

Irizarry forced a Novato fumble and recovered it. Sparks and Branden Webster also recovered fumbles.

The Tigers, Peninsula Pop Warner League champions, finished the year 8-2-1 overall.
