Softball sign-ups

The Los Gatos­Saratoga Girls Softball Association will continue sign-ups for the spring 2003 season through Jan. 15. Girls ages 7­14 are eligible for the recreational league. For more information or a registration packet, call the league's hotline at 408.291.2148 or email LGSGSA@att.net.


Brogan wins

Brian Brogan of Los Gatos won five straight matches to claim in the boys 16s title at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Open held recently in Irvine.

Brogan, the No. 9 seed, won a thriller in his first match, beating John Curtius 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker. He then defeated No. 8 seed Leif Sunderland 7-6, 6-1 and No. 2 seed Kale Planck 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals.

Brogan edged No. 5 seed Scott Hohenstein in a 10-1 tiebreaker to advance to the finals, then nudged No. 3 seed Shan Sondhu in a thrilling 11-9 tiebreaker to win the title.

Brogan plays at Courtside and for Los Gatos High School.


Soccer players

The Los Gatos Salsa, a girls under-16 Class 1 soccer team, is looking for players for next fall. For information, call Steve Stavis at 408.358.2046.


Christmas Cup

The Homestead Christmas Cup IX boys soccer tournament continues this week on area fields. Upcoming games include:

Games Dec. 14 at Homestead include: 8:30 a.m.—Saratoga-Sequoia, Lynbrook­Live Oak; 10:15 a.m.—Homestead-Pioneer, Woodside-Alisal; noon—Los Altos­Leigh, Gilroy-Independence; 1:45 p.m.—Los Gatos­Harbor, Santa Teresa­Seaside; 3:30 p.m.—Santa Cruz­Gunn, Monta Vista­Salinas.

Games Dec. 14 at Valley Christian include: 1 p.m.—Aptos-Leland; 3 p.m.—Santa Clara­Berkeley.


Youth grants

The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame (BASHOF) is accepting grant applications from youth organizations and schools interested in purchasing new sports equipment.
