The Montclair Trio will perform in St. Luke's evensong program
The Montclair Trio will perform as part of the St. Luke's evensong service on Jan. 5 at 4 p.m. The program begins with a short, traditional Episcopal evening prayer service set to music, then ends with a concert.

Titled "A String Extravaganza," the concert will feature music by Beethoven, Ernst von Dohnanyi and Jean Francais. This will be the first St. Luke's appearance for the trio, which is comprised of local musicians Randall Weiss on violin, Patricia Whaley on viola and Cheryl Fippen on cello.

Weiss was the San Jose Symphony's assistant concertmaster from 1985 until this year. He has also played with the San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Ballet, served as assistant concertmaster of the Music in the Mountains Festival and served as concertmaster and soloist with the Santa Cruz County Symphony. His international performances include appearances in Austria and British Columbia; at the latter he won the Victoria, British Columbia, Concerto Competition.

Whaley is an active soloist, chamber musician, orchestral performer and teacher who held the position of assistant principal viola with the San Jose Symphony from 1983 until this year.

She has also performed with the San Francisco Opera and Midsummer Mozart Festival. From 1987 to 1992, she taught viola in the music department at San José State University.

Fippen is the assistant principal cellist for the Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley Orchestra, and was the assistant principal cellist for the San Jose Symphony. A graduate of the University of Illinois and the University of Iowa, she was a fellow at the Massachusetts-based Tanglewood Music Center for two seasons.

She also performs with the American Musical Theatre of San Jose and the Music in the Mountains Festival and maintains a private cello studio.

Other upcoming evensong performers include harpsichordist Jung Hae Kim; classical guitarists Babak and Pedram Falsafi and soprano singer Michelle Wardrip, joined by The Chancel Strings. There will also be a dual concert by flutist Roxanne Shoemaker and St. Luke's own organist, Richard Coulter.

Everyone is welcome to attend the evensong service and concert. There is no charge for the concert, but a freewill offering will be accepted. St. Luke's Episcopal Church is at 20 University Ave. For more information, call 408.354.2195
