Let There Be Lights
By Dick Sparrer
There was a time, not so very long ago, when outdoor Christmas decorations meant a string of colored stretched across the roofline of the house and a wreath hung on the front door.

Through the years, the displays started to take on a new look—the lights started to blink.

But all of that is in the past. There are holiday decorations all over the area this December, but these are not your father's decorations. No, these displays are extravaganzas.

Christmas comes to life in the front yards of various Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga homes with displays we all can enjoy by simply driving by. But there are few in the area that are worth taking the time to stop and appreciate.

The local display that's received the most attention is the one located on Danielle Place off Bicknell in Monte Sereno. Alan Aerts has gathered an eclectic collection of holiday figurines and combined them with lights and music to create a Christmas spectacular in his expansive front yard.

But the display presented by the Aertses isn't the only one worth viewing in the area. For those families interested in taking a Christmas evening ride to check out the decorations, here are a few possibilities:

The Los Gatos Almond Grove District— There are a number of homes in the downtown area of Los Gatos where residents have gone all out in their decorating efforts, including the bright, giant reindeer watching over Tait Avenue. But there's more to find by traveling down Massol, Nicholson, Bachman and the other streets of the Almond District.

The lights are bright on this Los Gatos home on Bayview.

Blossom Hill Manor— Some beautiful holiday displays are there for the viewing, especially on Camellia Terrace, Farley and Longwood.

Kirkorian Way— It's just a single home, but the lights are sensational, and it's worth a ride down the court off of Daves Avenue to check them out.

Johnson Avenue— The residents in this historic Los Gatos neighborhood go all out for holidays, and it's certainly no different at Christmastime.

Nido Drive— It's worth a short drive just outside of East Los Gatos to check out the display at the home located on this San Jose street.

Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road— You can't miss this one, located just across from Saratoga High School on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road. It's bright lights illuminate the night.

Regency Drive— They've gone all out this Christmas at a home on this street in the Prospect area of San Jose, just outside of Saratoga.

All of those decorations, and the Aertses' home too—and we can enjoy them all ... knowing that we won't have to pay the PG&E bills!
