'HONK!' coming to Daves Avenue Jan. 30Feb. 2
Fourth- and fifth-grade students from Daves Avenue School will be performing HONK! for the 31st annual Daves Avenue Musical Theatre. HONK! is a humorous musical adaptation of the children's classic The Ugly Duckling. Tickets will go on sale Jan. 21 at Daves Avenue for all shows. Performances will run from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2 at the school cafeteria, with the Jan. 30Feb. 1 performances at 7 p.m. and the Feb. 2 show at 2 p.m. The cost of the tickets has not yet been determined.
Eat to support Los Gatos High School students
The Italian language class of Los Gatos High School is hosting a fundraiser for its upcoming trip to Italy. On Jan. 18, an Italian buffet lunch will be served at Campo di Bocce, 565 University Ave. Food will be served from noon to 1:30 p.m., and bocce ball courts will be available from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets can be reserved through Italian instructor Amy Torchia at atorchia@lghs.net. All proceeds will benefit the class.
Animals focus of high school essay contest
The Humane Education Network will be holding its 13th annual high school essay contest regarding the treatment of animals. All high school students are welcome to enter the contest, which will award a first prize of $500, a second prize of $250 and a third prize of $100.
Students are asked to "write an essay that demonstrates an understanding, based on facts, of the inhumane treatment in the U.S. of one animal species (domestic, wild or captive) or of one animal issue. Explain why the mistreatment concerns you, discuss the reasons it should be ended and explain the measures you and others can take to end it to secure a peaceful future for the animals." Entries must be typed, titled and sourced, with a maximum of 1,000 words. Entry forms are available by calling the network at 650.854.8921. Entries must be received by March 5.
