Nearly 350 Los Gatos students participated in the annual Community Against Substance Abuse (CASA) essay contest. The topic for this year was to "write about good character traits and explain how these traits will help you to make choices to stay away from drugs and alcohol and live a healthy lifestyle."
Eight students from various district schools were selected for first, second and third prize. First-place winners won $50, second place $25 and third place $15.
In the fifth-grade category, Francesca Ferrari of St. Mary's Catholic School took first place. Pooja Desai from Blossom Hill Elementary was second and Brittany Bozzini of St. Mary's Catholic School was third.
In the middle school category, Emily Machado of St. Mary's finished in first place, with Mary Sweeney of Fisher second and Jessica Osterhout of C.T. English third.
Stephanie Murray took first place for the high school division, while Domenic Denicola received second place. Both students are from Los Gatos High School.
Twenty-seven runners-up received Jamba Juice certificates. Runners-up included:
