What's the difference between dogs, cats and rabbits? A lot—except when it comes to the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley, which will run a low-cost "altering" clinic for all three kinds of pets during February, which is Spay and Neuter Month.

The nonprofit shelter is taking appointments now for surgeries at half off its already reasonable prices, which include a physical exam, anesthesia, hospitalization and the surgery itself. Costs vary depending on the type of animal and its gender and size, but it's well worth it! Altering a pet has three benefits: It helps curb the problem of animal overpopulation, it helps prevent certain reproductive system cancers and it makes pets less likely to wander from home in search of a mate.

Appointments are on a space-available basis. To reserve a spot for Rover, Fluffy or Flopsie, call 408.727.3383, ext. 763. Incidentally, every month is a good month to adopt a shelter pet, so for those readers who don't have a companion animal but have thought of getting one, the Prowler wholeheartedly recommends adoption!

Speaking of good causes, the Art Museum of Los Gatos at 4 Tait Ave. will hold a raffle and silent art auction Feb. 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. as a benefit for the Los Gatos Museum Association. The exhibit, Touch My heART, will be up beginning Jan. 30. For tickets or more info, call 408.395.7375.

The Prowler's own heart has been touched for many years knowing how many loyal folks read this column. Due to renovations to the "Around Town" section in the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, the Prowler's column is going the way of the dinosaur. But, like those memorable lizards, this cat hopes to be similarly remembered. Thank you, Los Gatos!
