Local baseball talent honored at
Hot Stove Banquet
By Dick Sparrer
The Bay Area has for years been a hotbed of baseball talent.

And no one knows that better than the organizers of the Santa Clara County Baseball Fundraisers Hot Stove Banquet. They've been honoring local baseball players for the better part of two decades.

They'll be at it again on Feb. 4 when the 19th annual Hot Stove Banquet will be held at the San Jose Elks Club. The evening begins with no-host cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the awards presentation at 8 p.m.

The awards celebration is traditionally a "who's who" of major league baseball talent.

Barry Bonds, a five-time National League most valuable player, is among the former Hot Stove winners. So is former NL MVP Ken Caminiti.

So are Dave Righetti, the American League rookie of the year in 1981, and Carnie Lansford, who won an AL batting crown.

And the list goes on. Past area winners have included Scott Erickson, Mark Langston, Dan Gladden, Anthony Telford, Dave Steib, Gregg Jefferies, Mike Mussina, Brian Johnson, Pat Burrell and Rick Helling.

The highlight of the night will be the announcement of the major league player of the year and pitcher of the year awards.

Other awards to be presented at the banquet include: minor league player of the year; minor league pitcher of the year; college player of the year; college pitcher of the year; junior college player of the year; junior college pitcher of the year; high school player of the year; scout of the year; the service award; the Loyd Christopher Award; the award for academic achievement; and the award for outstanding organizations.
