It was a game Los Gatos was supposed to win—a game the Wildcats needed to win. And win they did. The Cats rolled to a 53-32 victory over last-place Homestead last week to even their league record to 4-4 as they head down the home stretch in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL).
The Cats outscored the Mustangs in every period on the road to the lopsided Tuesday night win. Now they prepare for tough tests with Gunn (5-4), Fremont (6-3), Palo Alto (6-3) and Wilcox (5-4) to close out the league season.
It's quite a title race that's brewing in the De Anza Division. Fremont and Paly share the division lead with matching 6-3 records. Milpitas is close behind at 5-3, with Gunn and Wilcox a game out of first at 5-4.
Los Gatos actually sits in sixth place in the circuit but trails the leaders by just a game in the loss column. So with two weeks left, the championship remains very much undecided, and six clubs still have a shot at the top spot.
Things will filter down a bit this week with a full slate of games on tap in the division. Los Gatos will host Gunn on Feb. 12, 7 p.m., and visit Fremont on Feb. 14, 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats close out the regular season with a pair of home games the following week, Feb. 18 against Palo Alto and Feb. 20 against Wilcox.
The Wildcats did what they had to do last week—beat winless Homestead in their only game of the week.
Chris Clock and Aaron Goldfarb tossed in 13 points apiece to lead the Cats to the easy win over the Mustangs. Clock had a three-point bucket among his six field goals, and Goldfarb pitched in five field goals and added three points at the free-throw line.
Nik Kay supported with nine points for the Cats, and Jamal Modir, Fletcher Anderson and Dan Bitticker finished with four each. Bitticker dropped a three. Rory Bauer, Mike Robards and Jordan Senner rounded out the scoring with two points each.
Anderson leads girls
The girls at Los Gatos High got even last week, and it was at the expense of the winless Los Altos Eagles.
The Gatos girls evened their season record to 10-10 and leveled their record to 4-4 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL with a lopsided 36-17 win over the Eagles. Los Altos slipped to 0-8 in league play with the loss.
Sophomore center Alexa Anderson was the big scorer for the Wildcats in the win with 18 points. The 6-foot-1 sensation tossed in eight buckets from the floor and added a couple of free throws to take scoring honors for the Cats. Junior Katie McClenathan chipped in with six points in the win.
The Wildcats led just 14-9 at the half but outscored the Eagles 8-4 in the third and 14-4 in the fourth to roll to the win. Los Gatos outscored Los Altos in every period.
Shand sparks win
A second-half goal by Brittany Shand snapped a scoreless tie and lifted the Los Gatos girls soccer team to a 1-0 win over Cupertino last week.
The win followed two ties to open the week for the Wildcats, who are now 3-5-3 in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.
The Cats opened the week by battling Gunn to a scoreless tie; then they came from behind to knot rival Saratoga 2-2.
The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 first-half lead, but goals by Ashley Benson and Merin Clark in the second half helped the Wildcats pull out the 2-2 draw. The Falcons also scored a second-half goal.
Boys win, tie
Goals by Derek Tam, Brett Cavanaugh and Jeff Li helped the Los Gatos boys soccer team to a 3-0 win over Cupertino in De Anza Division play last week.
The Cats, who had opened the week with a 1-1 tie against Fremont, are now 7-1-3 in the division and 9-3-5 for the year.
Tam opened the scoring for the Cats with an unassisted goal in the first half. Cavanaugh scored off a Li assist and Li scored off an assist from Dave Barden to help the Cats open up a 3-0 lead before intermission. That's the way things ended up in the Thursday game.
Earlier in the week, both Fremont and Los Gatos scored second-half goals and ended up in a 1-1 draw.
