Civic center new
home for Music
in the Plaza
The annual Music in the Plaza summer concert series is making a permanent move to the civic center lawn, the Los Gatos Town Council decided earlier this month. The event, attended by 800 to 1,200 people weekly, features a series of 10 to 12 concerts and has been a tradition for nearly 15 years.
Historically, the event was staged at the Town Plaza Park, but construction at that location last summer forced the town to temporarily move the concert to the civic center lawn. Afterwards, the town's arts commission learned through a survey that a majority of last year's attendees and sponsors preferred the new location.
Citing other advantages of the new location, including more lawn area, better pedestrian access, increased access to parking spaces and better acoustics, the commission recommended that the council allow the event to permanently relocate. The action was approved unanimously.
Town council regognizes four for their services
The Los Gatos Town Council recently applauded the work of four individuals in the community. Los Gatos High School senior Mark Lubeck, whose mother is also the town's treasurer, received a commendation for serving one year on the community service commission. His term ended September 2002.
Joining him in receiving town recognition were Melanie Defé, SuEllen Sterling and Bill Callahan of the farmers' market. Defé and Sterling have operated the market for more than 10 years. Callahan, better known as "The Oyster Guy," has also been a presence at the market for nearly a decade.
"Community doesn't happen with one person," said Callahan, who lives in Santa Cruz. "The sense of community we have in Los Gatos is the envy of every town"
