It's still a toss up in the boys basketball race in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. But Los Gatos boys basketball team needs a couple of wins and a little help from its friends to figure in the title picture.
The Wildcats split a pair of decisions last week, losing a 66-59 overtime heartbreaker to Gunn before beating Fremont 64-50. The win and loss left the Cats 5-5 in the division, but still just a game back in the loss column with two games left to play.
Palo Alto leads the pack at 7-4 with just one game remaining. Wilcox, Milpitas and Fremont share second place with matching 6-4 records followed by Gunn at 6-5 and Los Gatos.
To figure in the title picture, the Wildcats need to beat both Paly and Wilcox this week. The Cats host the Vikings on Feb. 18 and the Chargers on Feb. 20 in a pair of 7 p.m. games.
That outcome would leave the Cats tied with Paly, Wilcox and Gunn in the loss column, and Gatos would have to hope for someone to knock off both Milpitas and Fremont. While farfetched, the scenario is still a mathematical possibility.
But Gatos' title hopes were dealt a severe blow last week when the Wildcats lost in overtime to the Titans. The game was a see-saw battle for four quarters before the Titans outscored the Cats 11-4 in the extra period.
Nik Kay was the scoring leader for the Wildcats in the game with 23 points. Chris Clock pitched in 18 points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Aaron Goldfarb also finished in double digits with 10 points. Mike Robards added four points and Rory Bauer and Fletcher Anderson had two apiece.
Los Gatos jumped back in the race with a 64-50 win over Fremont to finish the week.
The game was tied 29-29 at intermission, but the Cats outscored the Firebirds 17-8 in the third and 18-13 in the fourth to win by 14.
Clock was the big scorer for Gatos with 16 points. He had four threes among his five field goals and added two points at the free-throw line.
Kay had a big night with 13 points, most of it coming on six buckets from the floor. Bauer added nine points, including a pair of threes, and Matt Martini and Robards hit six points apiece. Martini also had a couple of threes.
Kyle Gisler had a three among his five points. Goldfarb added three points, Goldfarb three and Anderson, Jamal Modir and Jordan Senner two each.
The Wildcats are now 13-10 for the year.
Girls basketball
The Los Gatos girls pulled over the .500 mark for the year with a pair of De Anza Division wins last week. The Wildcats knocked off Gunn 43-37 and beat Monta Vista 36-30 to improve to 6-4 in division play and to 12-10 for the year.
Marissa Nunn pitched in 10 points to lead the Cats to the win over the Titans. Alexa Anderson supported with eight points.
Anderson came back with a game-high 16 points in the Gatos win over the Matadors. Virginia Fritsch chipped in with nine points and Nunn added five.
