Dwindling number of nurses raises concern

As the need for nurses increases and the number of people entering the field declines, the country is facing a nursing shortage like never before. Nurses at local hospitals say that the grueling shifts and mandatory overtime common in the profession can lead to burnout, which leads to mistakes that threaten patients' safety. And many are wondering aloud what it will take to remedy the situation before it reaches the crisis point.  More

Youth substance abuse Affordable housing School budget cuts
On March 8, members of the community will gather in the Los Gatos High School gymnasium to discuss issues affecting Los Gatos youth, including alcohol use and stress.  More The Town of Los Gatos Redevelopment Agency is quickening its steps to commit some of its remaining $1.9 million to specific affordable-housing projects before Gov. Gray Davis can get his hands on the funds.  More A large group of teachers, parents and Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District officials came together recently to discuss staff layoffs, the loss of millions in state funding and a potential parcel tax election.  More

Town budget cuts Helping local schools Kosher bakery
To balance the town's budget, which was revised recently based on lower revenues than originally anticipated, staff have had to make across-the-board departmental cuts.  More Now eating out is not only fun but it benefits local schools as well—a host of local restaurants have teamed up to donate their profits over the next few Tuesdays to the Los Gatos Education Foundation.  More Mama's Bakery of Los Gatos has just been certified kosher, and just in time for the important Jewish holiday of Purim.  More
