As a Los Gatos soccer coach charged with lewd conduct and sexual battery with a minor prepares for his March 25 court appearance, the community is reeling from the fact that this isn't the first time a coach in town has been accused of sexual misconduct with an athlete.
Jason Allen Hemmes, 45, was arrested, then charged with the two felonies March 11 after admitting to police that his relationship with a 15-year-old girl he coached was inappropriate. Since the news first broke, police have received a call from a woman who claims that her 15-year-old daughter also received an "inappropriate email" from Hemmes, Santa Clara County Sheriff Det. Guy Kuyat said March 14.
Hemmes did not return a call to his home last week.
A sheriff's deputy patrolling Lexington Reservoir on March 11 happened upon a parked white Ford Expedition and saw Hemmes quickly moving from the rear seat to the driver's seat while a female in the car adjusted her clothes in the back seat. According to sheriff's deputies, Hemmes told the deputy the female was 35 years old, but when the deputy asked the female for her age, she said she was 15.
Hemmes, who has coached soccer and softball teams in the area for a number of years, has no criminal record, Kuyat said.
"You would think he's a nice guy. He's like any dad that comes and helps out," Dave Walsh, coach of the Los Gatos United Soccer League, said of Hemmes. Hemmes was an assistant coach in the league, where his two daughters play, according to Walsh.
Both men had been involved in the Bobby Sox softball league in previous years.
Ed San Juan, president of the soccer league, said Hemmes has been suspended and banned from the league.
"There are many broken lives because of this," Walsh said.
This is the second time a coach has been accused of sexual offense with a minor in the town's recent history. In 2001, former Los Gatos High School softball coach Todd Lafferty was sentenced to two years in prison and three years probation after pleading guilty to five charges of sexual misconduct involving three underage girls.
Hemmes posted a $60,000 bail last week. He is scheduled to appear at Santa Clara County Superior Court in downtown San Jose at 9:30 a.m. on March 25. Anyone with more information about the case should contact Det. Kuyat at 408.808.4500.
