Gatos volleyball program will move on, without Jack
By Dick Sparrer
Tom Jack is spending much of his time these days working with kids.

So what else is new? The Los Gatos boys volleyball coach has been working with kids for years in the high school gym, teaching them how to block, kill and serve a volleyball.

It's different now, though. The kids Jack is working with these days are under 3 years old.

The veteran Los Gatos volleyball coach has stepped away from his job as the boys head coach in order to spend more time with his own two kids, 8-month-old Tyler and 28-month-old Tanner.

"It was a tough decision, because I love the teaching and the competition aspects of coaching," said Jack. "I have been coaching now for 14 years. It was also hard to give up a program that I started eight years ago at Los Gatos High, a program that I put a lot of time and effort into growing over the years."

Jack built the Los Gatos volleyball program into one of the best in the Central Coast Section. Now he hands the reins over to former Los Gatos star Matt Lyles, an assistant coach on last year's squad. Louisa Scoggins returns for her fifth season as the junior varsity coach.

Jack, who will remain with the program as a volunteer coach, led the Wildcats to five league championships and two seconds in seven years as the varsity coach. His teams won the CCS championship in 1996, finished second in 1997 and reached the semifinals four times. The Cats posted a 167-21 record (72-7 in league) during Jack's tenure as the head coach.

"Now it is time to watch my two sons grow," said Jack, "and put more efforts their way."

The Wildcats opened the season in strong fashion last weekend by reaching the semifinals at the Aptos Tournament. Gatos lost 15-3, 15-5 to Bellarmine in the semis.

The JVs went the varsity one better, winning the Aptos title with a 15-12, 4-15, 15-10 win over Bellarmine in the finals. Rob Couchee was named the tournament's most valuable player, and Cody Stewart was picked to the all-tournament team.

Gatos beat Aptos 15-4, 15-11, Scotts Valley 10-15, 15-3, 15-3 and Mitty 15-5, 15-3 in pool play, then beat the Monarchs again 15-12, 15-4 in the semifinals.
