The Los Gatos Rotary Club and Los Gatos Weekly-Times are working together to coordinate an Operation Yellow Ribbon campaign to send letters and care packages to U.S. troops who are originally from Los Gatos and Monte Sereno.
For care packages to be sent, the Rotary Club must know the names and contact information of these individuals, said Rotarian Michael Frangadakis. He is asking members of the community with information to contact him. They should also contact the Weekly-Times so the paper can publicize the efforts of those individuals overseas.
"It's very important that the troops get the support of the homefront. It gives them a sense of purpose," Frangadakis said.
A Vietnam War veteran, Frangadakis remembers how appreciative he was that his neighbors sent him a care package when he was in the military in the 1960s.
"The cookies were crumbled, stale and smashed to smithereens, but it was one of the greatest gifts I ever got. I've never forgotten," said Frangadakis, who has remained in contact with his former neighbors to this day.
The war veteran plans to contact other Rotary clubs in the area about starting similar campaigns.
Frangadakis can be reached at 408.354.4992 or at mike@frangadakis.com. Those who wish to contact the Weekly-Times should call 408.354.3110.
