Shein
Larry Shein died April 6 at his parents' home in Baltimore, Md., after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 35.
Shein was born in North Carolina and grew up in Rhode Island, where he graduated from Classical High School in Providence. After graduation, he moved to Israel and became a paratrooper for the Israeli army, stationed in Lebanon.
Following his military service, he worked briefly for the family real estate business in Rhode Island before moving to Los Gatos in 1991. While living in Los Gatos, Shein attended De Anza College and worked in the operations and circulation department for the Los Gatos Weekly-Times when it was owned by Metro Newspapers.
After graduating from De Anza, Shein attended UC-Berkeley, where he received a bachelor's degree in political science. An early Internet user, he headed up the 1995 development and launch of Metro's Boulevards.com Internet subsidiary, which operates city information sites internationally.
Shein then traveled for a year, visiting Australia and Asia. Upon his return, he accepted a position with the Israeli communications firm Gilat Satellite Networks and then worked for Radware, a manufacturer of network management software based in Tel Aviv.
Shein was an avid outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed snowboarding, mountain biking, scuba diving and running in triathlons.
In 2001, he developed a chronic cough that turned out to be the result of a rare and deadly cancerous tumor known as an atypical carcinoid.
Shein sought treatment for the tumor, undergoing radiation, chemotherapy and several surgeries to remove the growth in his chest.
Despite positive results after the surgeries, the growth returned in November of 2002. "Unlike many, he did not sit on his deathbed wishing he had done more or wishing he had spent less time at work and more with family and friends," his brother Joshua Shein said in a prepared statement. "Larry always did things exactly as he wanted. He did more by age 35 than many experience in a 'normal' lifetime. He always lived life to its fullest."
Shein is survived by his parents, Donald and Ruth (Tennenbaum) Shein of Baltimore, Md., brother and sister-in-law Joshua and Keira Shein of Baltimore, Md., sister Naomi Perez of Miami, Fla., and grandmother Ernestine Tennenbaum.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Hadassah, 3732 Old Court Road, No. 205, Baltimore, MD 21208.
