Seeking nominations for 2003 Seniors of Distinction Award
By Dick Sparrer
Jim Sugai was a tireless worker for the town of Los Gatos during his 22 years in the parks department.

But his contributions to Los Gatos didn't end with his retirement in 1983. He continues to serve the town as a volunteer in a number of different roles.

It was for that volunteer effort that Sugai was recognized last year as the 2002 Los GatosMonte Sereno Senior of Distinction Award winner during ceremonies at The Terraces of Los Gatos.

That was nearly a year ago. Now it's time to begin the nominating process for the 2003 award, and Sugai joins a committee of seven who will go through the process to select his successor.

For the seventh straight year, The Terraces and the Los Gatos Weekly-Times will co-sponsor the Seniors of Distinction Award, which recognizes the achievements of older adults in the Los Gatos and Monte Sereno communities.

Past winners include Sugai, William Cilker, Beverly Rouse, Dale Hill, Emerson N. Shaw and Knowlton K. Shore. Prior to the Weekly-Times' participation, The Terraces presented two awards each year—one to a Terraces resident, and another to a community member. Dick Peryam and Bill DuSel won Terraces awards and Bill Miller and Dr. Ed La Veque won community honors in 1995 and 1996.

Residents of Los Gatos and Monte Sereno ages 65 and over are eligible for nomination for the award, which honors "senior citizens who have enriched the lives of others through outstanding contributions," said Pam Bancroft of The Terraces.

The Seniors of Distinction will be selected by a committee of judges made up of community and sponsor representatives and will be recognized at a champagne reception May 22 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at The Terraces. Los Gatos Mayor Sandy Decker and Monte Sereno Mayor David Baxter will make the presentation.

Nomination forms are available in the Los Gatos Town Library, Los Gatos Town Hall, Monte Sereno City Hall, Monte Sereno Post Office, the office of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, Whole Foods, the Los Gatos History Club, Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Co., the Los Gatos Senior Center, The Terraces of Los Gatos, the Meadows, and Live Oak Adult Day Care.

The nomination deadline is May 9 at 5 p.m. Nomination forms should be mailed, delivered or faxed to Pam Bancroft, The Terraces of Los Gatos, 800 Blossom Hill Road, Los Gatos, 95032; the fax number is 408.356.9647. Employees of the Weekly-Times and The Terraces are not eligible.
