A Los Gatos soccer coach who was arrested last month on charges of child molestation and is expected to enter a plea this week, now faces charges involving another girl.
Jason Hemmes, 45, who remains free on bail, was originally charged with lewd conduct and sexual battery following his arrest last month; those charges have been changed to two counts of lewd conduct with a child 14 or 15 years old and one charge of a lewd act with a child under 14.
Hemmes is scheduled for a court date on April 23 at 9:30 a.m. in Dept. 23 of the county courthouse.
The first victim is a 15-year-old on a Los Gatos United Soccer League team of which Hemmes was the assistant coach. Sheriff's deputies took Hemmes into custody after discovering Hemmes and the girl in a car parked at Lexington Reservoir.
According to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Rob Baker, the charges involving the first victim stem from incidents that took place between December 2002 and March 11.
Baker said the second victim called the sheriff's office to talk about her experience with Hemmes between May 1, 2000 and June 15, 2000. "She came forward when she heard of his arrest," Baker said. If convicted of the resulting charge, Hemmes will have a "strike" on his criminal record.
Baker said one of the victims lives in Los Gatos, while the other lives in San Jose. Each of the felony charges carries with it a maximum penalty of eight years in prison. If convicted of any of the charges, Baker said, Hemmes will be required to register as a sex offender.
Hemmes has since been suspended and banned from the soccer league. "This is really a parent's worst nightmare, when a person who is trusted to take care of these kids and teach them about self-respect and fair play and good sportsmanship turns around and abuses their trust," Baker said.
The sheriff's office is continuing an investigation and asks anyone with information about the Hemmes case to call Det. Guy Kuyat at 408.808.4500.
"We're always looking for more potential victims that might be out there," Baker said.
