Los Gatos volleyball teams are rolling along
By Dick Sparrer
It was spring break for most of the students at Los Gatos High School last week, but there was no week off for the boys volleyball team.

While the Wildcats did get a week away from the pressures of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division season, they still had a match to play—and they made short work of Leland in non-league action.

The Cats improved to 11-5 for the year with a 15-11, 15-6, 9-15, 15-8 win over the Chargers.

Mike Robards led the Cats to the victory with 15 kills and 28 digs.

Keith Catanese and Shaun Sullivan supported with 14 kills apiece.

A week earlier, the Wildcats nailed an impressive 15-13, 15-5, 16-14 league win over second-place Homestead. Fletcher Anderson led the Wildcats with 15 kills and also hammered three service aces. Sam Moisenco added 10 kills.

The win was an important one. Los Gatos improved to 6-0 in the division with the win, and the Mustangs fell two games off the pace in the loss column. Homestead beat Fremont twice last week to improve to 6-2 in league play.

Earlier that week, Gatos rolled over Wilcox 15-1, 15-3, 15-3. Sullivan had nine kills and three service aces, and Ryan Holst led the team with 12 assists. Shane Baxley came through with the match-winning kill.

Los Gatos returns to De Anza Division competition this week. The Cats were to host Santa Clara on April 22 and will visit Saratoga on April 24. Los Gatos will host the second annual Los Gatos Invitational on April 26.

The same night the varsity defeated Homestead, the Los Gatos junior varsity rolled past the Mustangs 15-8, 15-13.

The Los Gatos JVs are rolling along this spring. The young Wildcats won their fifth tournament championship of the season on April 12, when they won six straight matches to take the title in the Gilroy Tournament.

The Wildcats posted a 15-9, 15-12 win over Bellarmine in the tournament championship match. They had beaten Oak Grove 15-3, 15-3 in the tourney playoffs, then knocked off Mountain View 13-15, 15-3, 15-8 in the semifinals.

In pool play, the Cats topped Oak Grove 15-6, 15-4, Monterey 15-3, 15-9 and Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep 15-3, 15-6.

Cody Stewart led the squad with 31 kills in the tournament, and Brian Register hammered down 19. Rob Couchee and Eric Rowell had 14 serving aces apiece, and Rowell had 12 kills. Kris Haushalter added six kills, and back row specialist Dan Norvelle had a team-high 28 digs.

Earlier that week, the young Cats had handled Wilcox 15-3, 15-7 in league play. Register had six kills, and Steve Conry added three. Rowell had three aces.
