Braves unbeaten in major division
By Dick Sparrer
Geo Shannon ripped a two-run double for the Tigers, and Derek Rodrigues singled for the A's.

But other than that, there wasn't much happening for the Tigers and A's last week when they faced the Braves in Los Gatos Little League major division play—Steven Zavodnick and Nick Hirschman saw to that.

The two hurlers combined to toss the first-place Braves to back-to-back wins last week, helping the club push its record to 8-0 for the year.

Zavodnick was virtually untouchable in the two games. He tossed three no-hit, no-run innings against the A's, striking out eight along the way, and he came back with three no-hit, no-run innings against the A's, striking out seven.

Hirschman was just about as impressive. He gave up just two runs to the Tigers on the Shannon double; then he flipped no-hit, no-run baseball for 22/3 innings against the A's, striking out eight.

But Zavodnick and Hirschman provided more than just pitching for the Braves last week. Zavodnick had three hits in the win over the Tigers and came back with four against the A's. Hirschman ripped a two-run triple against the Tigers and belted three hits against the A's.

Zavodnick singled home a run in the first, doubled home two in the fourth and doubled home two more in the fifth to lead the Braves to the lopsided win over the Tigers.

Hirschman chipped in a two-run triple in the fourth, and Justin Lewis doubled twice, including a two-run two-bagger in the third.

Zavodnick was 4 for 5, and Hirschman, Kyle Johnson and Sam Defever had three hits each for the Braves in the win over the A's.

In other league action last week, the Indians scored four runs in the seventh to pull out a 9-5 extra-inning win over the Reds.

Nate Burke was 3 for 3 with a double, Chris Bitter doubled twice and Jason Shepardson cracked a two-run double in the fourth to lead the Indians to the victory.

Trevor Rowell had a two-run single in the third for the Reds, and Travis Bonner tossed six strong innings, striking out 12.

Andrew Salazar had three hits, and he joined Nathan Aguiar, Kevin Murphy and Patrick Impey to toss a one-hitter for the Yankees in a 14-1 win over the A's. Sonny Garber added two hits in the win.

Kyle Weiss was 4 for 4 and Corey Lanagan and Matt Berg ripped two hits apiece to lead the A's to a 14-8 win over the Cubs.

Jared Bernstein had three hits and scored three runs, Jake Scullion doubled twice and Tyler Shultz singled and doubled for the Cubs.

Stephen Hight belted a three-run homer in the fourth and also tossed a complete game to lead the Red Sox to a 7-1 win over the Cubs. Hight allowed just one hit and struck out 10. Tim Garvey singled and clubbed a two-run double in the third for the Sox.

The Giants rolled to an 11-1 win over the Cardinals. Matt Horton had three hits and scored three runs, Kiko Alonso singled and doubled, Brian Rose had three hits to drive in three runs and Matt Walleen doubled twice. Sean Harrington also had two hits in the win.

Los Gatos Little League major division standings (as of April 20): Braves 8-0, Giants 5-2, Indians 5-2, Tigers 5-2, Red Sox 4-3, Yankees 4-3, Cubs 2-5, A's 2-6, Reds 1-6, Cardinals 0-7.

Coaches workshop

The Los Gatos Little League, in cooperation with the Positive Coaching Alliance, will host a workshop for coaches on April 27, 5:30 p.m., at the Los Gatos Recreation Center, Room 8, 123 E. Main St. The clinic is mandatory for all coaches and managers in the T-ball through major divisions.

The alliance is a Stanford-based nonprofit organization that stresses how "youth athletics presents a tremendous opportunity for athletes to develop life skills that will serve them well beyond the playing field," according to Mark Carlquist of the Los Gatos Little League.

For more information, call Carlquist at 408.354.1955.

Little League Day
