The California Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, led by Assemblyman Joe Simitian, has taken a stance opposing Gov. Gray Davis' proposed basic aid education cuts. The committee took a 5-0 vote against Davis' idea of taking $126 million in property tax revenue from the state's basic aid school districts, which includes the Los GatosSaratoga Union High School District.
With the vote, the Assembly will remove from their counterproposal to Davis' budget the item about the state taking away basic aid funding. "It's not a reduction of state support to 50-plus basic aid school districts—it's a taking of local property tax revenues," Simitian said. "My hope is that the administration will withdraw its proposal when the governor's revised budget is released in mid-May."
Simitian is the Assembly representative for Los Gatos and Monte Sereno.
