Whether it's a stunning sunset in watercolors or a confrontational steel sculpture, art is a divine thing. And there is no better way to appreciate it than by viewing what goes into the creation process. That's why this kitty can't keep calm about the Silicon Valley Open Studios program.

Coming to southern Santa Clara County on May 17 and 18, featured hot spots include Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, Campbell and San Jose. The Open Studios project is free and allows residents to participate in a self-guided tour of the county.

Be sure to pick up a tour guide before they disappear. There are 10 Los Gatos locations where guides are available, including the Los Gatos Public Library, Tercera Gallery, the Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company and the Los Gatos Framing Company. A complete listing of Los Gatos map locations, as well as a history of the project, can be found at www.svopenstudios.org.

Those who get an art craving before May 17 can visit the Los Gatos Town Council chambers on May 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. for an artist's reception for Sol Carson. This local artist, who has been working for 50 years, will have his oil paintings exhibited at the chambers through June 27. The chambers are open and available for viewing (if unoccupied) Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 408.354.6820.

Also on May 1, the Los Gatos eXperience will have a public unveiling of its expansive online town project at the Great Bear Coffee Shop. The exhibit, detailing the ins and outs of the realistic virtual online map, will be up for a month.
