It was their final home match of the season, so Los Gatos volleyball coach Matt Lyles let his three seniors showcase their talents for the hometown crowd.
Turns out, though, that it wasn't the final home match of the year for the Wildcats after all—the Central Coast Section seeding committee saw to that last weekend.
The Cats will open the CCS playoffs at home this week when they host Willow Glen on May 15, 7 p.m., in a first-round match. The winner moves on to the CCS quarterfinals on May 17 at Santa Clara High School.
Los Gatos enters postseason play with a 19-6 season record. The Cats posted a 12-0 mark in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The Cats had clinched the league championship two weeks ago, then finished league play last week with wins over Fremont (15-3, 15-12, 15-4) and Mountain View (15-4, 13-15, 15-4, 15-13).
Gatos whipped the Spartans on senior night last Tuesday, and seniors Shaun Sullivan, Ryan Holst and Ed Yip came through with solid efforts.
Sullivan led the Cats to the win with 17 kills. Holst chipped in with nine assists for the Wildcats and Yip had three blocks—one of them solo—and nine digs.
Fletcher Anderson supported with 12 kills and Mike Robards led the team with 21 digs.
Los Gatos closed out the regular season with the win over Fremont on Thursday. Robards led the Cats with 14 kills.
The Wildcats had finished fifth in their own Los Gatos Invitational tournament. They won three matches in pool play, beating Mitty (15-3, 15-3), St Lawrence (15-5, 15-3) and Serra (15-10, 15-11), but then lost to Fremont (15-11, 15-12) in championship play.
Los Gatos locked up the division title with a 15-8, 15-10, 16-14 win over Homestead. Casey Pfeifer led the club with 42 assists, Sullivan had 19 digs and Anderson had 19 kills.
Robards chipped in with 10 kills and Keith Catanese had two solo blocks.
Sullivan finished with 17 kills to lead the Cats to a 15-8, 15-7, 8-15, 15-6 non-league win over Mt. Madonna. Robards added 10 kills and Sam Moisence and Anderson had nine apiece. Anderson also had three service aces and Casey Pfeifer had 45 assists.
The Los Gatos junior varsity team ran its record to 11-0 last week with a 15-10, 12-15, 15-6 win over Mountain View. Brian Register led the club with 11 kills and 17 digs. Steve Conry and Frank Fritsch had three kills apiece, and Dan Norvelle had 16 digs with Chris Renfer adding 11. Frank Fritsch had two solo blocks and Rob Couchee starred as a setter and had two service aces.
Gatos had beaten Homestead 15-7, 15-5 the week before. Register had nine kills and 10 digs, and Cody Stewart had six kills and 11 digs.
The young Wildcats had finished first in the Los Gatos Junior Varsity Invitational tournament. They won four matches in pool play, beating Serra (15-2, 15-3), Pleasant Valley (15-11, 15-10), Logan (15-4, 15-4) and Compolindo (15-12, 15-9).
Gatos beat Logan a second time 15-9, 15-6 and handled Gilroy 15-10, 15-12 to move into the championship match against Bellarmine. The Cats topped the Bells 15-9, 15-9 to win their sixth tournament title.
Stewart, who had 67 kills in the tourney, was named the tournament's most valuable player, and Couchee and Register were picked to the all-tournament team.
Register had 47 kills in the tourney, and Norvelle and Conry had 43 digs apiece. Renfer added 25 digs, Fritsch had four solo blocks, Kris Hauhalter had three solo blocks and Couchee had four service aces.
